My favourite meal that I remember at home has to be Dad cooking us fried onions for supper with 'skinny' chips. Mum hated onions but they were smashing. Dad also made the best fish and chips ever. The batter would be home made and was always crispy, I can still taste it today. We often had for supper (as well as dinner) runner beans, sliced in a slicer and piled high on the plate. Sometimes we would have a slice of bacon to go with it. Oh I miss these scrumptious dishes, they were so simple but yummy. Mums home made hot bread and her steam puddings were mouth watering..... Sundays she would make these puddings for visitors, everyone loved them. Sometimes she made home made plum jam and use that in the dish of the pudding apparantly Dad hated plum jam but he never complained. Mum's pastry was so perfect as were her sponge cakes. Its funny because my Victoria sponges will only turn out nice and light if I use Mum's old tins to bake them in. So I won't be parting with them. Dad always grew his own veg so it was plentiful in the house. Mum was always cooking and it was put in steel pots on the table and we helped ourselves. How spoiled we were looking back. These pots costs Mum two hundred and fifty pounds in 1973, and were guarenteed a life time. They are called Rena Ware and were made in Canada. A lady came to my home to demonstrate them and Mum had enough money then to buy them, I didn't unfortunately as I had just purchased my first house. But I do have them today because when Mum died, Dad said to me 'you had better have them because your mother would not have wanted me to have them'. He was not allowed to wash them, only Mum was allowed to wash them, but it paid off because they are as good today as they were then! Hilary | |
